Ani Le Dodi - The Hebrew words (above) are the words inscribed on this pendant. Spoken: "ani ledodi vedodi li"; and translated to English they read: “I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine…”, which is the first half of the verse taken from Psalm 6:3.

This verse holds a great meaning by many interpreters of the Holy Scriptures throughout the generations. Translated literally it is a love declaration committing one’s wholeness to their lover while being assured that his/her devotion is mirrored by the loved one.

In Jewish tradition the book of Psalm and its beautiful rhymes is not about love between people, but about the love of one to God. Traditionally the verse “I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine” is associated with the first month of the Hebrew year, the month of Elul. Indeed, if you take the first letter of each word of the phrase it will spell the name of the month in Hebrew:

During the month of Elul, following the Jewish New Year, ‘Rosh Ha’Shana’, is the most holy of all Jewish holidays, the Day of Atonement, ‘Yum Kippur’. During the month of Elul, and especially in the ten days that separate ‘Rosh Ha’Shana’ from ‘Yom Kippur’ and on the day itself, the believers pray for the forgiveness of God for the sins committed against him.

The verse “I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine” comes to underline to commitment of the believer to God, coming first from him and then answered by receiving God’s support. It also enhances the absolute demand for true and honest intent from the believer’s while asking for forgiveness, an intent that is hopefully derived from love of God and not from fear of his might.
