The entire verse reads:“If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget [her cunning]. ” {Psalm 137:5}.
This verse is taken from one of the most famous of Psalms, reciting the grief of the people of Judea, who were exiled from the land of Israel to Babylon by the Babylons, swearing never to forget their homeland and their now demolished fair capital, Jerusalem.
This verse, has been a symbol of the longing Jewish Diaspora to their homeland and their capital city of Jerusalem. For generation these words were recited in every Jewish wedding by the groom, in symbolic last act that reinforces the memory of the destruction of the second temple by the Romans (which was the beginning of the second exile of the Jews from their land), the groom puts ash on his head, smashes a glass, and says the words from Psalm 137:5-6 :
“If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget [her cunning]. If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy.”.
