The Jerusalem Ring - This impressive ring is engraved with two of the most familiar symbols of the holy city of Jerusalem, the wall that surrounds the ancient part of Jerusalem and the Lion, which is also the symbol Jerusalem’s municipality (pictured below).
In Jewish tradition the Lion is the symbol of the tribe of Judea, from which all Jews are spawned. The lion has become to symbolize Judea because of the prophecy mentioned below and because in biblical times lions roamed the areas Judea has occupied in the Holy Land.
In Genesis 49:9, Judea, Jacob’s son, is promised the undisputed rule on all of Jacob’s decedents (tribes of Israel), liking it to a Lion couching over his pray, assured and secured from all. That prophecy materialized when King David, a son of the tribe of Judea, who was the poorest of all tribes, came to rule after the demise of King Saul.
“Judah is a lion's whelp from the prey my son thou art gone up he stooped down he couched as a lion and as an old lion who shall rouse him up” (Genesis 49:9)
King David, the conqueror of Jerusalem and the one who gave Jerusalem it's name and status as the capital of the Hebrews, came from the tribe of Judea, making the lion symbol of the tribe also the symbol of Jerusalem.
